The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning, saying there could be almost 20in of snow and high winds, the force of which, it says, could last up to eight hours. A similar storm on 18 January caused hundreds of injuries and widespread travel disruption. People riding bikes and walking found themselves caught in branches and undergrowth. The storm, which could bring in average snowfall of 10in to 20in in the capital, is the result of a weather system known as “the Beast from the East”, which is having a “significant influence” on Britain. The Met Office said: “This is the strongest event this winter so far, with a similar event occurring on 18 January. In that event a wind gust of 170mph was recorded at Heathrow Airport.” It comes as forecasters warn that the wind and rain driven by the “Beast from the East” will bring gale force winds, torrential rain and snow showers to northern, eastern and central parts of the country. Heavy snowfall of 5-10in is expected for Scotland, Yorkshire and the Midlands, while parts of northern England could see 20in. The risk of snowfall for a wider part of the country is up to 50 per cent. A Met Office yellow warning has been issued for Yorkshire, Lancashire, the Midlands, the north-east, Northumberland, North Wales, Westmorland, and Cumbria. In Scotland, the yellow warning area covers the north-east, north-west, Highlands, western, the central and southern isles. Forecasters warn that up to 80mph winds could batter the UK, with gusts of more than 80mph predicted in northern England, the Midlands and East Anglia, where up to 20in of snow and rain is expected. Forecasters predict that wind speeds could reach up to 70mph in the far north of Scotland. Airports will cancel flights when winds exceed their design limits and many roads, including a two-mile stretch of the M62 motorway in Scotland, will be closed.
